Donation from J.H. Bruns Collegiate
J.H. Bruns Collegiate was awarded a $20,000 prize from the Staples Superpower Your School contest for their work on environmental activism. To celebrate Earth Day, students in grade ten English class raised awareness of both environmental and human rights issues by putting on a week-long fundraising campaign. Their Parent Council donated $50.00 to kick-start the fundraiser.

Students, along with running the table in the front lobby, researched various local charities
advocating for human rights, a key component of the work that they do in ELA throughout the semester. After their research, they posted their persuasive reviews to their class website. Parent council read the reviews and voted to send $172.00 raised to the Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties (MARL).

Students from J.H. Bruns Collegiate know that environmental degradation will lead to more human rights violations and that there is work to be done. Students are asked to examine global issues and to recognize that any man’s suffering should diminish us, they are asked to recognize the importance of being involved in mankind and that no man is an island. They begin the course with John Donne’s “Meditation XVII” and learn that “any man’s death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind”.
